Jennifer G asked:
I received an Amazon 2 days ago and the bird absolutely stinks of urine bad. I have given her 2 different baths but cannot seem to get her to stay in long enough to do anything? Is there some kind of soap or something that is not harmful to Parrots that I could use on her, or a powder or something? Please help.

There is a spray that you can buy from the pet store that is safe. You can also spray him with distilled water until he’s covered pretty good and he will groom himself. It might take a few baths but he will be smelling better in no time.

Buy a perch for the shower, put him on it and give him a shower but make sure you dry him with a hair dryer on allow him to sit in the sun.

NO SOAP, SPRAY OR POWDER!
I would just let him bathe several times a day. The smell will wash out. It will take time though. Showers are great and they make some shower perches, just get the one that hangs over the side of the shower, I don’t trush suction cups.
Don’t blow dry the bird! They wait to start grooming until they feel they have soaked enough. Blow dryers also have TEFLON coatings inside of them and TEFLON is TOXIC to birds.
Most sprays will get the bird to start plucking, which is NOT good. You can use a clean plant mister and soak him with spray if he likes it, but don’t force the issue. Also remember to remove all food before you do this. Wet food grows mold which will also hurt your new FID.
How are you giving the bath? If it is in the bathtub, that might be your problem. My birds are scared of it. Try a glass pie pan filled with water and let him explore it.

A longer shower might be the trick but if the bird soaks in a bowl then maybe a little lemon juice will help.

Why does she stink of urine??? Did someone pee on her? Seriously if there is no reason for the smell, she probably should go to the vet. Amazons don’t normally smell that way.
Otherwise if it is not a medical problem, just keep misting her and let her preen herself. The feathers that got stinkyfied will eventually be preened out. Just don’t be tempted to spray anything like Glade around her cage or put up any kind of scent coverups. They could be toxic to birds.

Amazons do have a particular scent that is normal for them. It is usually described as “musky”. Some people find it really noticeable and bothersome while others don’ t mind it at all. You can keep it down by showering the bird which amazons usually love but you will never get rid of it completely.
